Ernie Clark. Hilperton Division, Wiltshire Council.

At a meeting yesterday, the 2012/13 tax levy was agreed.

The budget will continue to invest in key services and protect the most vulnerable in our communities.

It was agreed that council tax will be frozen at zero per cent for the third year running, that free swimming for young people during school holidays will be introduced, and support will be provided for communities to celebrate and take part in this year’s once-in-a-lifetime events; the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympic Torch Relay route.

I supported the Lib Dem attempt to get free swimming for under 16s and over 60s, and their suggestion that our sports centres should open on Bank Holidays. Both amendments to the budget were defeated by the whip being applied to the Conservative group.

One surreal part of the proceedings saw councillors having a 'recorded vote' (when how each councillor votes is noted) on a proposal that 'The use of recorded votes is suspended for the rest of this meeting'!! No wonder people think that politicians are mad...
