Innox Riverside planning application refused.

Support for the scheme seemed to wane as the debate took place.

After a two hour debate last night, the WC planning committee refused the planning application for the old Bowyer's site.

Various town centre traders cautioned the committee that approval of the application could threaten the future of Asda, The Shires and Knee's Department Store as well as other town centre shops.

Committee members were also concerned that the effect of permitting two cinemas could mean both operators pulling out.

The reasons were as recommended by the planning officer and only three of the eleven member committee voted against refusal.

The applicant has the right to appeal against the decision. An appeal would be heard by the Planning Inspectorate and would be decided purely on its planning merits.

The WC Cabinet member for economic development, who was at the meeting, was urged to contact the applicant to see if a more acceptable scheme could be found for the site as the committee agreed that it wanted development there but it needed to be the correct scheme.
