Wiltshire's Arctic Convoy heroes to be honoured.
The Arctic Star medal Veterans of both the Arctic Convoys and of Bomber Command will be presented with their medals in a special ceremony at County Hall, Trowbridge on Friday.Described by Winston Churchill as 'the worst journey in the world', the Arctic Convoy ships of the Royal and Merchant Navies made repeated perilous journeys in sub-zero temperatures to ensure vital food and arms supplies reached Russian shores. Many lost their lives and the efforts of all those who took part are widely recognised as helping Russia’s war effort and significantly shortening the Second World War, but it has taken over 70 years for their heroic efforts to receive proper recognition.Friday's event will celebrate their heroism and a total of 25 veterans from Wiltshire will be presented their medal by their local MP. A video booth will be set up to capture real life experiences from the veterans.Trowbridge White Ensign Association, (Wiltshire's oldest ex Royal Navy and Royal Marine Old Comrades Association), will also perform a 'Splice the Mainbrace' issue of rum to all hands and then issue a tot of Pussers Rum to veterans.
