Successful start to dog microchipping campaign.
Latest press release from WWDC.
Since the new appointment-based ‘at home’ microchipping service was launched in November, 31 dogs have benefited, with a further 14 appointments confirmed. These are in addition to the 50 pets microchipped at this summer’s West Wilts Show.
An average of 160 strays are retrieved by the dog warden every year - these are pets that have no means of identification and are found to be wandering the streets, yet it is a legal requirement for a dog to wear a collar with ID stating its name and address.
Microchips are the size of a grain of rice, and sit in the scruff of the dog's neck forever once inserted - the process is very quick and no more painful than a quick injection. The microchip has a unique identification number, which can be read by a scanner to give the owner's name and address details.
The new service means that dog owners can call WWDC and arrange an appointment for a home visit - microchipping in this way costs just £15 per dog.
