Is 'Community Remedies' the answer?

Police and Crime Commissioner Angus Macpherson would like the views of residents in Wiltshire and Swindon on the use of Community Remedies to tackle some low-level offenders.

To this end, he is launching a consultation with local people.

The result will be used to help shape options to be used in discussions between officers and victims.

Mr. Macpherson said: "It is important to note that community remedies will only occur if the victim of the crime agrees. Using this restorative approach when it is appropriate can help officers and can be very effective . Offenders are dealt with swiftly and in a way that reduces the chances of re-offending. Victims of crime can request that offenders directly repay the harm they have caused by, for example, cleaning off graffiti or repairing damage to property. Such remedies often increase levels of victim satisfaction compared to the court process".

The consultation is available on the PCC website until 24th November.
