Probably one of many in the area.

A pre-Victoriam well has been uncovered during the construction of the HRR.

I have received the following email from a local archaeologist:-

'Hi Ernie,

I understand you have been inquiring about the well that was uncovered on the relief road. I went to the site early this morning to locate it as it should have been picked up on an initial geophysical survey or a later watching brief.

I could find no reference to it on old maps so informed the County Archaeologist as this is the correct procedure from my perspective.

I then went and asked for access in order to record the well as I was under the impression is was to be filled in today (this didn't happen). This was granted, which was a surprise, as the contractors did not have to do this. I have done a brief report which has now been logged with the H.E.R.

I had spent most of the previous night attempting to find archaeological reports relating to the relief road to little avail.  H.E.R. are investigating whether the correct procedures were adhered to and that's where I've left it.

I've attached an annotated photo',

Hopefully this provides you with some further info' but I will say the contractors were a great help. It may be worth asking the question whether the planning agreements regarding archaeological consultation were followed correctly.

Best wishes

I haven't been able to up-load the photo but please email me at ernie.clark@wiltshire.gov.uk if you would like a copy.

The WC archaeologist has advised that NO working system was agreed before work on the road started (but there was a condition saying that it should be) and that an archaeologist should have been present during the early phase of the work.

I'm in no doubt that no action will be taken against Persimmon for possibly destroying historic items but I would be happy to be proved wrong.
