From: Councillor Ernie Clark (Hilperton Division)
Councillor Stephen Oldrieve (Trowbridge Paxcroft Division)
Dear Resident,
We thought that the Hilperton Gap was safe from further development for at least a decade. Now it is under nearer term threat.
Wiltshire Council has shortlisted land in the Gap for housing development. Some 380 houses could be built, at densities of four times those in Hilperton and in the Victoria Road area. Questions would arise of access to these houses, traffic, how the character of the area would change and loss of amenity.
However, this does not have to happen!
Council documents show that there are more than sufficient spaces for the required homes until 2026 on other sites around Trowbridge that have been offered to the Council – and in any case it is not clear why Trowbridge is being asked to take a disproportionate share of the Wiltshire total. There is also a conflict of interest involved – although this is not stated openly, Wiltshire Council owns part of the land in the Gap and would realise a substantial gain if it is zoned for housing.
These proposals are out for consultation until 31st March 2015. You can access the documents at:
