...the Wiltshire Regiment was all but annihilated at Gallipoli.

Not wishing to spoil your weekend, I think that we should all spare a moment to ponder on one of the disasters of World War 1.

The Gallipoli campaign (also known as the Dardanelles offensive) was suggested by Winston Churchill as a way to get to the Black Sea.  It is now regarded as a bungled and misconceived operation that was one of the great Allied disasters of the war.  More than 44,000 allied troops died along with between 56,000 and 86,000 Turks.  Churchill was forced to resign as the First Lord of the Admiralty.

The first landing took place on the 25th April 1915.

Four Hilperton men lost their lives and, as mentioned above, the Wiltshire Regiment was all but wiped-out.
