August is traditionally a quiet month at County Hall with very few meetings. There have been a couple of Western Area Planning Committee meetings, but no Hilperton items were discussed.
As I write this the Hilperton Relief Road is still not open although it has been surfaced, had its white lines painted and had some electrics connected up. Oh, and the ‘bat bridge’ over Middle Lane has been constructed too.
The most recent news I have been given is that it should open at the end of September and, looking at the directions on the road signs at the Fieldways end, it would seem that the extension to Leapgate will be opened at the same time.
The spatial planning team at County Hall is due to roll out the next stage of the consultation process relating to housing quite soon. They are being very coy at not commenting on whether the Trowbridge side of the new road will be included in the process or not. In the previous stage of the exercise, over 50% of the responses from across the county related to the Gap. The big problem that the planners have got themselves into is the fact that they are worried that WC cannot show a five year supply of building land as required by the government. Interestingly, their opinion was contradicted by the Cabinet member for planning at a recent meeting of the full WC council. So, who is right? They both can’t be.
The closure of Church Street is not far away now and one must hope that its closure will mean that diverted traffic will continue to stay away from the centre of the village once the gas main work has finished.
