Green wheelie bins due to arrive soon.
The Bradford on Avon area should receive their bins during May.
Alternate weekly collections - where recyclable household rubbish is collected in one week and anything that can’t be recycled is collected in the following week - will launch in the Bradford on Avon area in May.
The District Council is working with Wiltshire County Council, Cleanaway and Hills Recycling to provide households with green bins and black boxes. The green bins can be used to recycle anything compostable, such as garden waste (grass cuttings, leaves, weeds, cut flowers etc), certain types of cardboard and some kitchen waste, including tea bags, coffee grounds and vegetable peelings. Items such as newspapers and magazines, cans, glass bottles and jars, aluminium foil and textiles can be recycled in the black boxes.
The ‘twin bin’ scheme has been operating successfully in the Melksham and Trowbridge areas since 2004.
Councillor Rosemary Brown, the District Council’s environmental portfolio holder, said: “We were recycling less than 8% of all household rubbish before we started alternate weekly collections, and now we are fast approaching 30%. With virtually every home on the scheme by the summer, we should see the figure rise even more.”
WWDC will keep households informed about what is happening with a leaflet drop a few weeks before the bins are delivered, and are planning information roadshows in Bradford on Avon before the new collections get underway. There will be further information and an adhesive calendar delivered with the containers, and staff are always available on the phone to help anyone struggling to use the new system.
