There is a new scam.
Please be aware of a new scam where fraudsters phone victims saying they have been put in the wrong council tax bracket and they are entitled to a rebate – they are asked for a payment up front to receive their rebate.
Councils will never phone out-of-the-blue to discuss a council tax rebate. If people receive a call of this nature they are advised to put the phone down straightaway.
No legitimate organisation will ask people to pay an advanced fee in order receive money; so people should never give out their card details.
Anyone who think they have been a victim of fraud, should hang up the phone and wait five minutes to clear the line as fraudsters sometimes keep the line open. Then they should call their bank or card issuer to report the fraud. Where possible they should use a different phone line to make the phone call.
