"Introduce a wildlife conservation points system for all new builds."

I have been asked to publicise the following - and am happy to do so.

Dear Swift Friends and Colleagues,

I am indebted to Nick Brown of the Wildlife Trust in Derby for sending me this.

It was calculated recently that the UK's Swifts need 11,000 new nest places crested for them every year just to survive at their present population level, there being so many changes to the existing building stock that eliminate in one way of other their old nest places.

Marc Pearson is a Swift activist based in Clowne, NE Derbyshire. Quite independently, he has set up the e-petition below which addresses this problem, and which is now live. Swifts are specifically mentioned in the second paragraph.

In essence what Marc is proposing is similar to the existing BREAM points system, but being obligatory would have more strength, and the e-petition’s aim would be to promote the idea as much as to provoke a governmental response.

Would you be willing to circulate the e-petition to your contacts?

Thanks and best wishes, Yours, Edward

My petition:

Introduce a wildlife conservation points system for all new builds.

Every new build, whether new homes or new commercial builds would have to gain a certain level of points before the building is signed off. I.e 2 points for a hedgehog hole, 2 points for a bird box, points for native planting etc. Points could be doubled if used in the correct scenario.

This would massively help to reduce the decline in many species highlighted by the 'State of Nature’ report published 3 years ago which reported that 60% of UK species were in decline. This would make a big difference in helping species that now rely on the urban environment such as the hedgehog, swift and house martin to name a few. The cost of the build would be far outweighed by the benefits to wildlife and humans.
