...saw the Battle of Jutland.

It was the largest naval engagement of the First World War and saw over 8,000 sailors perish in a matter of hours.  Four Victoria Crosses were awarded, some posthumously.

The German High Seas Fleet retreated to its home port and didn't venture out again, thus ensuring continuing British control of the North Sea and enabling a blockade to starve Germany towards submission.

Ther are many articles about this which are easy enough to Google but two phrases stick in my mind.

The first is the quote by Churchill who said of Admiral Sir John Jellicoe (commander of the British Grand Fleet) that he was "the only man on either side who could lose the war in an afternoon."

The second is from Vice Admiral Sir David Beatty (as yet another of his ships was destroyed by a massive explosion) "There seems to be something wrong with our bloody ships today."
