More cash on the way from Westminster?

Councils to get more cash amid possible backbench revolt.

It is rumoured that councils are to get an emergency cash injection for social care in the Budget with Conservative MPs joining councils to press the Prime Minister to take action.

The Government has given local authorities extra council tax-raising powers to pay for social care and 147 out of 152 social care councils will raise the precept this year.

But the extra income will not close the funding gap, with councils facing a £2.6 billion black hole in their social care budgets by 2020, according to the LGA. Ministers are also considering plans for families to use money from any inheritance to pay for social care.

A report by the Health Foundation warns that councils need an additional £2 billion in government funding to pay for social care. It says that "unacceptable pressure" is being put on vulnerable people and their families. The Local Government Association says that social care is on the brink of collapse. Meanwhile in a poll by the Care and Support Alliance, nine out of 10 GPs say reductions in social care is piling pressure on their surgeries.
