The land this path runs over has been harvested.

The path is not normally re-instated by the farmer when he seeds the land but, currently, the land has only 'straw stumps' on it and so can be walked without damaging any crops.

Of course, the path can be legally walked at any time (whether or not there are crops growing on it) but people usually avoid using it and walk around the field edge instead.
