With registration for the general election closing in less than a week, people are reminded not to wait until the last minute and register to vote before it’s too late.
To vote in the general election on Thursday 4 July, people must be registered by midnight on Tuesday 18 June 2024.
To register to vote people must be aged 16 or over, although only those aged 18 or over on polling day are eligible to vote, meaning those born on 4 July 2006 will be able to vote in a general election for the first time this year.
People who are not already registered can apply online at www.gov.uk/register-tovote.
Voters only need to register once, unless they have changed their name, address or nationality.
With the closing date for postal vote applications fast approaching, at 5pm on Wednesday 19 June, people who wish to vote in this way are also encouraged to do so as soon as possible to ensure their packs will arrive in time. People can apply for a postal vote at www.gov.uk/apply-postal-vote. Postal vote packs for new applicants will be sent out around Thursday 27 June.
The other key dates for the election are:
• People have until 5pm on Wednesday 26 June to apply for a proxy vote (for someone to vote on their behalf) – www.gov.uk/apply-proxy-vote
• People have until 5pm on Wednesday 26 June if they want to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate (if they don’t have photo ID) – www.gov.uk/applyfor-photo-id-voter-authority-certificate
• Polling opens on Thursday 4 July from 7am – 10pm
