Some recycling figures ...
West Wilts is seemingly doing quite well, but could do better.
The report itself runs to 14 pages and the following is a selection of the statistics/suggestions in the report.
Alternating fortnightly collections doubled recycling levels in comparison to areas with weekly collections.
The new council should examine the current policy of collecting garden waste from the kerbside and assess whether this would be better replaced with food or plastic/cardboard collections.
The new council should review the West Wiltshire pilot scheme to collect plastic and cardboard at 'bring sites' when considering future provision of facilities across the county.
The 10 Household Recycling Centres (HRC) in Wiltshire collect nearly 50% of Wiltshire's recyclables and the annual cost to run an individual HRC is between £180k and £200k.
The landfill tax that the council has to pay is currently £24 per tonne and is due to double by 2010/11. If the authority exceeds its allowance it is fined £150 per tonne for biodegradable waste.
