Trowbridge drunks beware ...
It is being introduced because of increased concern about alcohol related anti-social behaviour in the town centre and has the support of West Wiltshire District Council, Trowbridge Town Council and Wiltshire Police.

A DPPO does not stop people drinking alcohol in public places, but if they are asked by an authorised person to stop and fail to do so, it then becomes an offence.

The order will cover an area that includes parts of the district council wards of Trowbridge East, Trowbridge North East and Trowbridge Central. The project has cost approximately £8,000, most of which has been spent on consultation, signage and public notices.

Police data compiled between 1 April and 30 September 2007 provides evidence of 252 occurrences of behaviour that a DPPO would have had an impact on.

Councillor Chris March, community portfolio holder for the District Council said: “It is acknowledged by Councillors on all sides that excessive drinking is one of the major social ills of our time. Support for this measure was unanimous. We all feel this is a positive step in tackling the problem in west Wiltshire.”

Inspector Dave Cullop, head of Trowbridge police, has worked with officers from both the District Council and Trowbridge Town Council to bring about the DPPO. He commented: “The implementation of a DPPO has wide support throughout Trowbridge. The community has had enough of street-drinkers. If you want a drink in Trowbridge there are many licensed premises to cater for all in a safe managed environment.

“Using a term many will understand, I am simply 'calling-time' on the anti-social minority. My officers will be proactively enforcing the Alcohol Controlled Zone and anyone who chooses to ignore them will be dealt with.

“Police will also be using new powers that allows them to direct persons causing or likely to cause alcohol-related anti-social behaviour to leave an area for up to 48-hours".

The order will initially run until the end of September 2008. It is anticipated that the scheme will continue if it proves to be successful.
