Taxi trade pleads for fare increases ...
This has hit taxi drivers in the pocket and operators are asking West Wiltshire District Council for an increase in the tariff they are allowed to charge.

Proposals for increases of up to 29% in the cost of taking a taxi have been put forward. These will be considered by the licensing committee next Wednesday, and if agreed will then go out to consultation before a final decision in September.

For the normal 6am to midnight tariff the suggestions are an increase from £1.55 per mile to either £1.65 or £2.00. Changes to 'flag drop' prices as well as the mileage rates could mean a five mile journey increasing in cost from £9.70 at present to £11.80. There are also proposals to increase waiting time fees from 21p to 27p or 33p per minute.
