Tribute to Cllr. Tony Philips OBE.
Sudden loss of council stalwart.
I've known Tony for a number of years, but got to know him better in 2003 after I was elected to the old West Wiltshire District Council and he took me under his wing. He served over fifty year in local government and I asked his advice many times. Interestingly, he was the only councillor to serve for the whole life of West Wiltshire District Council and, at various times, acted as Leader of the council and its Chairman.
He stood as an Independent for many years but returned to the Conservative fold in 2007. Despite this, Tony was independently minded and never afraid to 'call it as he saw it' and always acted in what he saw as the best interest of the people he represented.
He was never convinced about the move to one council and as a member of the Implementation Executive, he did his best to stand up for the interests of West Wiltshire even if it meant upsetting senior Conservative colleagues. Interestingly, despite his knowledge and ability, he wasn't offered a senior post in the new council; perhaps he had ruffled a few too many feathers too often.
I last met Tony on Friday when there was a meeting about the new Trowbridge Area Board. Tony was hoping to be elected as vice-chairman and was looking forward to serving the people of Wiltshire for another term of office.
His passing will be mourned by many and my condolences go to all his family, especially his wife and daughters.
