Are you registered to vote?

Although the General Election has yet to be called, Wiltshire Council is already working hard to make sure that all eligible residents can have their say on polling day.

Wiltshire Council will be sending forms to households over the Autumn to compile a new electoral register that will be the basis for next year’s elections. By completing and returning the form, voters in Wiltshire will be making sure they will be able to have their say on what matters to them.

John Watling, head of electoral services at Wiltshire Council, said: “It’s simple to register, all people have to do is complete the annual canvass form that will be coming through their letterbox over the coming months, and they will be able to help choose the people that make the decisions which affect everyday life. For some people, this may be the first General Election that they get to take part in and may be worried about what to do”.

Karen Quaintmere, head of electoral administration for the Electoral Commission said: “There’s a General Election coming between now and June 2010, If people are not registered to vote, then they can’t make a decision about who represents them in Westminster. People should secure their voice on the issues that matter to them now: it only takes a few minutes.”
